Wash your wetsuit properly: How to keep your wetsuit as new for longer
A good wetsuit is your best friend in water: It protects you from cold water, wind and sun and ensures that you can stay in the water longer. 🤙 But so that your wetsuit doesn't smell bad or become brittle after a short time, it also needs a bit of love and care.
Here you can find out step by step how to properly wash, dry and store your wetsuit so that it stays by your side for many years!

Why is proper washing so important?
Salt water, sand, sweat and sunscreen add a lot to the material. If you don't clean your wetsuit properly after surfing or diving, it can lead to unpleasant odors, mold, or even material damage.
A well-maintained wetsuit stays elastic, protects better and looks like new for longer. Regular washing also saves the expensive investment and that not only makes your wallet happy.
Step 1: Rinse out right after browsing
As soon as you get out of the water, it is best to rinse the suit directly with clear, cold water.
This removes salt, sand, and other debris. Make sure to rinse the zippers, seams, and cuffs thoroughly as well.
💡 Extra tip: Avoid hot water! Too high temperatures can damage the adhesive and neoprene.
Step 2: Soak thoroughly
Once at home (or in your apartment), fill a large tub or sink with cold or lukewarm water. Add a special neoprene shampoo or mild detergent without emollients.
Let your suit soak for 10-20 minutes and knead it gently to remove any remaining dirt.
⚠️ Important: Do not use aggressive detergent or bleach! These attack the material and shorten its lifespan.

Step 3: Rinse well
After soaking, rinse the suit thoroughly with fresh water until there is really no more soap residue.
Make sure to rinse the insides as well, as sweat and skin oils often collect here.
Step 4: Dry properly
Now comes a crucial step: drying!
Hang your suit in a shady, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight as UV rays make the neoprene brittle.
It is best to use a wide bracket (such as a special neoprene strap) so that no pressure points form.
Let the suit dry first with the inside out, then turn it around. So everything will be evenly dry.
Step 5: Store correctly
Once dry, hang your wetsuit loosely on a wide hanger or store it lying down if you have enough space.
Please don't crumple or throw in the corner! This leads to creases that can remain permanently in the material.
Store your suit in a cool, dry place to protect it from mold and odors.
What to do if there is a strong smell?
If your wetsuit smells unpleasant (such as sweat or stale water) despite washing, a special neoprene cleaner with an antibacterial effect will help.
Some surfers also swear by a very small amount of vinegar in a water bath, but please be very careful and check beforehand whether your manufacturer recommends this.
A well-maintained wetsuit not only means better performance in water, but also extends the life of your favorite piece. With a little time and proper care, your wetsuit will remain flexible, odor-free and ready for every new wave!
