Are you looking for the perfect place to learn how to surf in Sri Lanka?

It was part of our Surf Spirit vision to create a retreat right on the beach — a place where people could surf, connect and relax to the rhythm of the ocean. We imagined a place where you could get straight out of bed, check the waves from the balcony, and jump in the water before breakfast. A place that is not only beautiful but also beginner-friendly and has that relaxed surfing energy that we fell in love with on our trips through Sri Lanka.

When we found Dewata, it all came together:
— A smooth, steady wave perfect for beginners
— A sandy surface (for safe wipeouts)
— A mellow right wave — ideal for longboard lovers

Since then, we've welcomed countless guests here, shared waves and built a community based on surfing, connection, and the beauty of simple seaside living.

This blog post isn't just about this place. It's about Why Dewata Beach has become our second home and why we think it's one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka to learn how to surf.

Where is Dewata Beach located?

Dewata is just a few minutes from Galle. The beach is also home to the locals: colorful boats in the sand, children playing after school, and that relaxed atmosphere that is becoming increasingly rare on the south coast.

The bay itself is long and expansive, with several surfing spots to choose from. Our favorite spot and also the place where we give our surfing lessons is at the very end of the bay, right in front of Beach Lodge. It's a gentle point break, super easy to access and lined with a series of beautiful palm trees. The wave rolls smoothly — perfect for beginners, longboarders or simply for anyone who wants to surf in a relaxed way in breathtaking surroundings.

Surfing in Dewata: A Beginner's Dream

If you're new to surfing or simply want to build up more confidence in the water, Dewata Beach made for you.
The waves here are usually small, soft and predictable.

Why Dewata works so well:

  • Constant, soft waves — almost every day
  • Sandy ground (no reef = soft landings)
  • Slowly breaking right waves — ideal for studying or longboarding
  • Local surf schools and rentals right on the beach

We've already watched so many of our guests here their very first wave have caught and this moment is always something special.

Discover more surfing spots nearby?

While Dewata is perfect for learning, there are plenty of other great surfing spots nearby — just a short tuk-tuk ride away:

  • Kabalana: Famous for “The Rock” — a powerful A-frame wave for advanced users and professionals.
  • Dalawella: Relaxed right wave, often with turtles nearby!
  • Koggala: A faster left wave that really revives on bigger days.
