Surf & Yoga Holidays in Portugal

Portugal is one of the most popular retreat destinations in Europe, and for good reason. In this blog post, you'll learn more about beautiful Portugal and why it's the perfect place for a surf and yoga retreat.

Surfing and yoga may seem different at first glance. One wild, dynamic and powerful, the other calm, meditative and flowing. But actually, they're a perfect match. Surfing requires full attention, physical strength, and good balance. Every wave is different. You learn to let go, adapt and respect the natural rhythms of the sea.

Yoga is perfect for you if you want to become more agile, stable and relaxed before and after training in water. Breathing exercises, targeted stretches and meditative practice not only provide physical relief, but also mental clarity. It also strengthens the muscles and joints that are particularly stressed when surfing.

A typical retreat day in the Algarve brings these two worlds well together. You start with an invigorating morning flow, activate your body, focus your mind and later glide into the waves with the surfboard. In the evening, a relaxing yin or vinyasa session helps you process and let go of the day's impressions.

On a surf & yoga retreat, you will experience a holistic experience that goes far beyond sport and exercise. It's about connecting with yourself, with nature, and with other people who are on the same wavelength.

You could say surfing and yoga are like yin and yang. They give you the perfect balance of activity and deceleration, challenge and regeneration, the outside world and the inner world.

Portugal — the retreat paradise on the Atlantic

Portugal has over 300 days of sunshine a year and a mix of nature, culture and serenity. The country is perfect for anyone who consciously wants to take a break. Especially on the south coast, in the Algarve, you will find endless sandy beaches, impressive cliffs and turquoise-blue water. A place where you can take a deep breath and get back to yourself.

Here you can easily leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind you. The coastal towns are really charming, from small fishing villages to lively surfing spots. There you can experience Portuguese joie de vivre in a relaxed atmosphere. If you want to escape mass tourism, you'll find places off the beaten track that inspire you, that let you cool down and give you the opportunity to get back in touch with yourself. Portugal invites you to take it easy, live more consciously and recharge your batteries. Day by day, sunbeam by sunbeam.

What makes Portugal so special:

Mild climate all year round & many hours of sunshine

In spring, from March to May, the air temperatures are between 17 and 24 °C. In summer (June to August), they then rise to 25 to 30 °C. In autumn, from September to November, the temperatures are 18 to 27 °C. Even in winter (December to February), temperatures are still 12 to 18 °C.

In spring, the water temperature is around 15 to 18 °C, in summer it is 18 to 21 °C. In autumn it is 17-20 °C and in winter around 14-16 °C.

Wetsuits are recommended year round. It is particularly recommended to wear 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm wetsuits here in spring, autumn and winter.

Fragen und Antworten

Why combine surfing and yoga in Portugal?

Surfing brings energy and flow in the water; yoga brings grounding, breath, and flexibility on the mat. Portugal offers coast, mild climate, and retreats like Habitat — a balance many guests seek after busy office weeks.

When is the best time to travel to Portugal?

Our retreat in Portugal is open from April to October. The climate in the Algarve is relatively mild all year round, which makes the region a great holiday destination. In general, however, Portugal is a rather cool country with a very strong sun. It can therefore get very warm during the day, but still cool down in the evening. We therefore recommend for all months also packing warmer clothes for the evenings and mornings. During the winter months it cools down too much at night, which is why we have closed our glamping retreat from November to March.

High season May - September

From May to September we are in the high season with summer temperatures of over 25 degrees during the day and daily sunshine. It hardly ever rains during this time! Although the coastal resorts come to life during this time and can get very crowded, at Habitat you still have the opportunity to completely switch off from everyday life and slow down, as we are far away from the hustle and bustle and in the middle of nature. Our small swimming pond provides the necessary cooling on hot summer days. The glamping tents are also sheltered by trees, so they don't heat up during the day.

Low season: April & October

Although this time of the year is slightly cooler than summer, the Portuguese climate spoils us with 7-11 hours of sunshine during the day. The average temperature during this time is between 20 and 25 degrees. In April, Portuguese nature is already in full bloom and our garden in the Habitat shines in all its splendor. It can occasionally rain during this time, with the rainiest months being November to March. In general, there are fewer tourists in the Algarve during this time and therefore fewer surfers in the water, which gives you the chance of more waves!

What is the correct airport?

The destination airport in Portugal is Faro (FAO). From there we can also arrange a shuttle to the retreat. Alternatively, you can also fly to Lisbon, but we recommend traveling on a hire car. You can usually find the cheapest flights on skyscanner.com.

What level are the surf & yoga classes suitable for?

Our Villa Andalucia is suitable for surfers of all levels, as we can cater to our bloody beginners as well as to our advanced surfers with our guiding concept. Our qualified surf instructors will tell you about your current surfing level upon arrival and can therefore be sure that we will challenge and support you in the best possible way during your week with us.

Our yoga classes are also suitable for all levels, and our certified instructors will meet your individual needs.
