6 things we've learned creating Surf Spirit

Founding Surf Spirit was an incredible journey and we're so thankful for every single step we've taken. Because in addition to all the positive moments, setbacks were also an important part of this journey. Today, we are proud to have welcomed over 10,000 happy guests and to have become the #1 surf retreat in Sri Lanka.

However, none of this would have been possible without the support of the amazing people we met along the way. We are incredibly grateful for our friends, business partners and guests who have entrusted their journey to us, who have left their comfort zone to travel to the other end of the world and who have shared their stories and experiences with us.

As we look back on those nine years, we feel inspired to share what we've learned. Whether you're thinking about starting your own business, joining one of our retreats or making a big change in your life, these are the lessons that have helped us grow. We hope they can also accompany you on your journey.

1. It all starts with a blank page

Time and again, we return to the moment when Surf Spirit was nothing more than a blank page. A completely blank page.

It was an idea at first. Then it became a concept and a name. Then a concept, a name and a logo and so on. That was the beginning and to have a positive impact on people's holidays and lives today is simply overwhelming.

We should never forget that with a single idea, we have the power to make a positive impact on someone's life. It doesn't matter what that idea is. And it all starts with a blank page.

2. “If you do it, do it right”

A Surf Life Saving Coach from Wales told us that in 2016.

It is super easy. Almost too easy. But this sentence has always stuck in our heads:

“When you do it, do it right. ”

Over the years, this phrase has become one of our most important values. Whether we're hosting a retreat, answering emails, building partnerships or teaching an hour, when we're doing something, we're doing it right. With care. With respect. With all my heart.

3. Being your own boss is the best and the hardest

No one tells you when you should start working.
No one tells you when you've messed up.
No one is telling you to work harder.

It doesn't sound too bad.

BUT

You become your biggest critic and your loudest cheerleader at the same time. There are sleepless nights. Long days. uncertainty.

But we've also learned that the only thing that really stands between you and the place you want to be... is yourself.

So bring out your inner cheerleader. Believe in yourself. Stand behind yourself.

4. You don't have to know everything from the start

When we started, we had no idea what was in store for us. The challenges, the mistakes, the growth, the solutions we needed to find.

We've done some research. We've thought everything out. But we definitely didn't have an answer for everything. And that's okay.

If you wait until you feel “completely ready,” you may be waiting forever. Focus on the next step ahead of you. The rest unfolds along the way.

5. Your idea will make a difference

Maybe it's “just” a smile after a surfing session.
Maybe someone will find clarity during a yoga session.
Maybe it's a conversation that makes a difference.

Whatever you create will touch people in ways you can't fully see. And beyond finances and efficiency, that is the true beauty of building something of your own.

You have the power to create positive change. Never underestimate that.

6th Take yourself seriously

Your thoughts and dreams feel natural to you, as if anyone could have them. But they're yours for a reason.

When you feel that inner pull. That intuition. That quiet voice that says “go there” — then listen. Follow her. Even though it feels small. Even though it feels scary.

After nine years, we can say that trusting this inner voice has changed our entire lives.

Building Surf Spirit was an enriching yet educational experience and we hope these lessons inspire you. The journey of growth never ends and we're excited to continue learning and sharing this adventure with all of you.

All the best,
Dana and Nils

Fragen und Antworten

What has Surf Spirit learned in nine years?

Since founding, Surf Spirit has learned that quality beats scale, real community matters, and guests need places to surf, practice yoga, and unwind. According to the brand’s own story, more than 10,000 guests have joined retreats in Sri Lanka, Spain, and Portugal.

Why is Surf Spirit considered a leading surf retreat in Sri Lanka?

Surf Spirit is known for years of experience, local coaches, and beachfront locations — from the Beach Lodge to the Jungle Villa. Small groups, thoughtful weekly plans, and personal care set it apart from mass tourism.

What makes Surf Spirit different from other camps?

Surf Spirit is built as a heart-led project: personal coaches, surf plus yoga in nature, and intimate groups. Instead of party-first camps, the focus is a safe frame where beginners and intermediates can surf and slow down.

What makes Surf Spirit so special compared to other camps and retreats?

For us at Surf Spirit, it is a matter close to our hearts to create places where everyone can immerse themselves in a relaxed lifestyle characterized by ease, passion and pure joy. We always have a limited number of guests in our retreats. In this way, we can make everything very personal and create moments together that we will never forget and feel pure life in the midst of nature, for which we otherwise have so little time in our everyday lives.

We believe in the unique combination of surf & yoga and its benefits for your body, mind and soul. We are one of a few retreats that focus equally on both aspects and offers you packages that already include everything you need during your time with us. In both areas, no matter what level you arrive at, we make every effort to bring you one step further to your destination. We'll do everything we can to make you have a really great time in the water, on the mat or around the fire in the evening.

Each of our trips is unique and we can't wait to show you our fantastic locations.
